10m²

The WA rule

Over 10 square metres? It needs a licensed removalist.

In Western Australia, homeowners can remove up to 10 m² of bonded asbestos themselves if they follow the safety rules. Anything larger, or any friable (crumbly) asbestos, must be removed by a licensed removalist. A typical fibro side fence or a single-car carport roof is usually over that limit.

Questions

Asbestos FAQs

How do I know if my house has asbestos?

If your home was built or renovated before 1990, there's a good chance some materials contain asbestos, especially fibro fences, eaves, roof sheets and old floor coverings. You can't tell by looking. A lab test of a small sample is the only way to be sure.

Is asbestos dangerous if I leave it alone?

Bonded asbestos in good condition is generally low risk while undisturbed. The danger comes when it's broken, cut, drilled, sanded or badly weathered, which releases fibres into the air. If it's damaged or you're planning work nearby, get it assessed first.

Can I remove asbestos myself in WA?

Homeowners can remove up to 10 m² of bonded asbestos if they follow the safety and disposal rules. Anything over 10 m², and any friable asbestos, must be removed by a licensed removalist.

How much does asbestos removal cost?

It depends on the type of material, the area, access and disposal. A small fence section costs far less than a full roof. Call us with rough measurements and we'll give you a free, fixed quote.

Do I need to leave the house during removal?

For most outdoor jobs like fences and roofs, no. For indoor work such as lino or wall sheeting, the area is sealed off and we'll let you know if you need to stay out of certain rooms while the work is done.
